Meet The Residents: Geraldine Romano

By: Melissa Kaiser, Monmouth Crossing Outreach Liaison

Residents like Geraldine “Gerry” Romano make my role as the Outreach Liaison at Monmouth Crossing truly special. Meeting her in her home was a delightful experience, and I discovered just how fascinating she really is.

Gerry is always on the go, making it quite the challenge to catch up with her. But finally, after a lively Bingo session at Monmouth Crossing Assisted Living, I managed to sit down with her.

Stepping into Gerry’s apartment, I was immediately captivated by a wall adorned with exquisite animal sketches. When I complimented her on her talent, she modestly shrugged it off as “only a hobby” and even offered to sketch my pet. But there was much more to Gerry than her artistic flair.

Gerry's career journey began as a real estate broker. Through hard work and determination, she climbed the ranks to become the owner of Maurice DuBois Real Estate Agency. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when she purchased a 25-room home at the end of the Verrazzano Bridge, transforming it into Shore Acres Home for the Aged – a loving residence for seniors. Remarkably, she initiated the purchase before informing her husband! Together, they managed the home while raising their family.

After moving from Brooklyn to Staten Island, Gerry eventually settled in Colts Neck, New Jersey. There, she raised two children who blessed her with four wonderful grandchildren. Drawn by Monmouth County’s natural beauty and open landscapes, Gerry brought her love for horses and birds, especially cardinals, to her new home.

When it came time for Gerry to choose an assisted living community, her experience as the proprietor of Shore Acres gave her a discerning eye. After visiting one unsuitable place, she and her daughter, Mary, toured Monmouth Crossing. Gerry knew instantly it was the right fit, feeling at home the moment she walked through the door. She has now been a cherished resident for over two years, staying active with various activities, dining with friends, and frequent family outings. Though she occasionally slows down to relax, her vibrant spirit remains unmistakable.

Before I left, Gerry reminded me to bring a photo of my dog for her to sketch, a request I eagerly agreed to fulfill. Shortly after, she called me with an afterthought, casually mentioning she had written a few children's books in her younger days. Her unassuming nature about this impressive accomplishment left me in awe.

We are delighted to have Gerry as part of our Monmouth Crossing family and eagerly await the next exciting chapter of her life. Stay tuned to see what amazing things she’ll do next!
